A very fine early 18th century mechanical equinoctial dial by Johan Willebrand of Augsburg.

Housed in its original card and velvet case, the dial is engraved with an extensive list of cities in Western and Eastern Europe. It is made of gilded brass and silver.

The mechanism allows the user to pre-set a latitude and the dial automatically erects to the right position.

A further example of this dial is in the Museum of the History of Science, Oxford. c.1700.
